Nothing compares to the look and function of your natural teeth, and with proper care, your smile can last a lifetime. However, problems such as decay, disease, or injury can endanger your teeth and ruin your smile. Root Canal Treatment (RCT), also known as endodontic treatment, is one procedure that can save teeth. In dentistry, root canal treatment focuses on treating disease and injury to the dental pulp. Not only does the treatment relieve your pain, but it also saves your tooth. The dental pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels, nourishes your teeth. Root canal treatment is sometimes required due to decay, infection, or injury to the dental pulp. When a tooth is chosen for an RCT, the first step is to numb the tooth and surrounding structures. This is accomplished by injecting local anesthesia into the nerve that supplies the tooth or into the tooth itself. You may feel a pinch during this process, similar to when you accidentally bite your cheek or tongue. The second step is to apply a separating barrier (known as a rubber dam) to your tooth. This step causes no pain or discomfort and provides the clinician with a dry, clean working environment. The debris covering the tooth is removed after the rubber dam is applied, and an access opening is created. This hole allows access to the pulp chamber. The crown portion of the coronal pulp is removed, and root preparation begins. After the roots have been cleaned, they are treated with antimicrobials and disinfectants. The roots are then sealed with gutta-percha and sealant, which are biocompatible materials. The crown is made of sufficient tooth-colored material.
