Teeth whitening uses a safe bleach called carbamide peroxide to remove stains from the enamel. Carbamide peroxide is a derivative of hydrogen peroxide that is applied to your teeth for a certain amount of time and is treated with a high-intensity light that goes deep into the enamel. “The bleach then penetrates through the enamel into the inner dentin layer of the teeth,” says Dr. Lowenberg. “It is here that the bleach breaks apart the dark molecules of stain deep inside the teeth, thereby giving the teeth a whiter appearance.” Needless to say, this is not like your at-home teeth whitening kit. “In-office teeth whitening is one of the most effective ways to whiten your teeth,” says Dr. Huang. "There are different in-office whitening systems, one-hour professional whitening or a dual-process method. A whitening gel is applied to the teeth, which most commonly uses hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient to lift stain particles off teeth. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down to the water, oxygen, and radicals. The reaction from these free radicals will lift stains from teeth and make teeth look ‘whiter.’”
